Child Obesity Facts

Immediate health effects:

• Obese youth are more likely to have risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure. In a population-based sample of 5- to 17-year-olds, 70% of obese youth had at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
• Obese adolescents are more likely to have prediabetes, a condition in which blood glucose levels indicate a high risk for development of diabetes.
• Children and adolescents who are obese are at greater risk for bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, and social and psychological problems such as stigmatization and poor self-esteem.

Long-term health effects:

• Children and adolescents who are obese are likely to be obese as adults11-14 and are therefore more at risk for adult health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer, and osteoarthritis.6  One study showed that children who became obese as early as age 2 were more likely to be obese as adults.12
• Overweight and obesity are associated with increased risk for many types of cancer, including cancer of the breast, colon, endometrium, esophagus, kidney, pancreas, gall bladder, thyroid, ovary, cervix, and prostate, as well as multiple myeloma and Hodgkin’s lymphom

I found these facts very interesting. I was doing a research paper in my after school program and came across these facts. We did a work shop based on healthy foods and how unhealthy food really affect american children. One thing I learned about child obesity is statistics shows that if more physical activity is in the child school than obesity can be prevented. I also learned that children staying at home and playing games can cause obesity. The child should go to the park and run around so they can get a source of exercise.

My Favorite Book ( Free Choice )

White Lines by Tracy Brown
I first read this book in the 9th grade. I was a freshman in Thurgood Marshall. I received the book from one of close friends. I really didnt want to read the book because it was so big, it had a lot of pages. My friend really recommended the book so I knew it was going to be good. I opened the book and read the first few pages it was sooo good. Its about a girl named Jada who grew up living a really hard life. Her mom was never home she was always at work. Jadas father died so she was raised by her stepfather. Jadas stepfather was a good father to her up until the point Jada became a teenager. When she hit her teens he treated her so badly with little respect. Jada couldnt understand why his new attitude was like this towards her. At the age of 17 Jada couldnt take it and she decided to leave her home. From then on Jada journey of a crazy life in the streets began. I can truly say this is my favorite book. I like this book because it shows a beautiful lesson on how someone who started at the bottom can make it to the top.

Abortion (SSR)

Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy. In New York State an abortion does not have to be performed by a licensed physician or in a hospital. At 24 weeks a second physician has to participate in the procedure. The public funds all or most medically necessary abortions. There is no parental consent required for minors in New York State. The cost of abortion is affecting the government. Abortion is one of the reasons why the government is in debt. Abortion was made legal in 1973. Medicaid covered all expenses for abortion. There was cases that argued about the decision of abortion. Abortion is affecting our society. There have been over 50 million abortions since 1973.

Abortion has many effects on our society and the world. The United States is already at $16 trillion in debt. Abortion is one of the reasons leading to this debt. If abortion had never been legalized in 1973, more than 17 million people would be employed, resulting in an additional $400 billion from those workers, with $11 billion contributed to Medicare and $47 million contributed to Social Security. The federal government spends a lot of money on abortions. There is soon going to be no more Social Security if abortions are continued. Putting an end to abortion will help Social Security last a little longer. At least 2.1 kids per household are needed to maintain stable population. Today there are only 2.0 kids per household. This is affecting the population for future generations.

Abortion was made legal because women have the right to make decisions about their own bodies. Abortion was also made legal because they have the power to that right regardless of the government policy. Even though women have the right to their privacy, I feel that abortion is wrong. Everyone has the right to live. I don’t think it’s fair to terminate an innocent life. No one terminated the mother’s life so why should she kill an unborn fetus. These babies are being hurt during these procedures. One of these 50 million who have been killed could have found the cure for something. They could have found a cure to AIDs, cancer, or even asthma. We would never know now because their mother’s choose to terminate their pregnancy. 

Teen Leader (FC)

A teen leader is a teen who creates a positive image for other youth. A teen leader is a positive role model, modeling good academic behavior, by attending school on a regular basis and having good grades. Teen leaders show their peers the difference between good and bad. For a teen to be a leader he/she has to be able to communicate and be dependable. You want others to follow your good example. Teens have to have leadership skills; this is something he/she has to believe in. Its also something he/she has to put action into. A teen leader has to be able to motivate others. In order to be a teen leader you also have to have self-confidence. You can not be a teen leader doing bad in school or not going to school. You can't encourage bad behavior. This is not an image you want to show other youth. I think every teen should be a teen leader. Not only to set positive examples but also to encourage other teens that are not on the right track. Any teen can be a teen leader. You just have to set your mind to it and take action!

Loan (FC)

Today in my afterschool program we learned about loans. Loans are money that has been given from one person (the lender) to another (the borrow) with a promise to repay. When you borrow a loan you sign a contract agreeing to make a certain number of payments for a certain amount by a particular date each month. Your payments on a loan and even borrowing the loan itself has an impact on your credit. There are seven types of loans. Open-ended loans, closed-end loans, secured loans, unsecured loans, conventional loans, pay day loans, and advance-fee loans.

Open-ended loans are loans that you can borrow over and over. Closed-ended loans cannot be borrowed once they’ve been repaid. When you make payments on closed-ended loans, the balance of the loan goes down. Some types of closed-ended loans are mortgage loans, auto loans, and student loans. Secured loans are loans that rely on an asset as collateral for the loan. Unsecured loans don’t have asset for collateral. These loans may be more difficult to get and have higher interest rates. Unsecured loans rely on your credit history and your income to qualify you for the loan. Conventional loans are those that aren’t insured by a government agency like the Federal Housing Administration (FHA), Rural Housing Service (RHS), or the Veterans Administration (VA). Payday loans are short-term loans borrowed using your next paycheck as guarantee for the loan. Advance-fee loans aren’t really loans at all. In fact, they’re simply scams to get money from you. 

Borrowing a loan impacts your credit score. The loan applications impact your credit. Timely loan payments raise credit scores and high loan balances may harm your credit. From this I learned the different types of loans. Which ones are good loans to take out and which ones I shouldn't take out.

This movie is about Two young Italian adults Will and Stan were driving along the country side of Alabama and decided to make a pit stop for groceries. As they were shopping Will mistakenly forgot to pay for tuna fish and placed it in his pocket. They paid the clerk for the groceries and began to start their journey again. As they were driving a cop pulled them over asking them to step out of the vehicle and place their hands on their heads. The officer then took the two into custody and placed them in the line up.

Stan and Will were placed in two different rooms to be questioned. They thought the questioning was based on the stolen tuna fish but, it was based on the clerk that was shot in the store they brought the groceries from. When the sheriff questioned Stan about the killing he confessed by an accident. Stan said “ I shot the Clerk ?“ he repeated this three times. The Sheriff thought Stan was saying it but Stan was asking if he shot the clerk. This was used as a confession to the crime. The officers then allowed Will and Stan to make a phone call. Will called his mom asking for a lawyer but, his mom said she would send his cousin Vinny who is lawyer.

College

Today I finally completed all of my college work for my EOP. I am so proud of myself because even though it was very stressful I never lost focus or gave up on myself. I hope that I get accepted to the college of my choice. I am a little nervous about attending college, but I am ready for the new experience. I feel going away to college will teach me and help me learn about many new thing. I know I will meet new people and hope that I find the perfect career choice. I am also very proud of myself because I will be the first person in my family to attend college. I know i am making my family proud and myself. My family has helped support me during my schools years and they support always encouraged me better myself. My top two college choice are SUNY Plattsburg and Oneonta. I recently had an interview with one of the EOP counselor's of Oneonta. I think I did really well with my interview. I feel that me and the counselor interacted very well and because of this I feel i have a high chance pf getting in. He actually told me he wanted me to come to the school as long as I sent my EOP forms in that i would be good. When I was prpearing my self for this interview it was a little nerve wrecking for me. I was scared to say the wrong thing, or seem to shy, but when I walked in their I knew I had to put all this to the side. I think I really did a good job of showing who i was and that i was a very positive person. The thought of going to college is a very bittersweet thought for me. I am happy that I will go o in life and accomplish many of my goals, but being away from my family is a little scary for me, but i know i will make them very proud.

College (PB)

I'm so passionate and dedicated about going to college. I finish sending out all my applications. All I have left to do is send out my transcripts and SAT scores. I'm now working on applying to EOP. I'm passionate about applying to this program. everyday I call different counselor from the college EOP program just so they can be familiar with me. EOP stands for Educational Opportunity Program. It provides academic, personal and financial support to New York State residents who hold a high school diploma or its equivalent, and who have the academic potential to earn a college degree.  Although EOP applicants do not meet general admissions criteria due to historic academic or economic disadvantage, they demonstrate a high level of personal motivation and are receptive to receiving support. I feel like this program is fit for me because based off my financial situation and academic performance my college choices are limited.The EOP program will provide me with the tools I need to earn my degree. EOP will benefit me economically, socially and educationally. EOP will benefit me by providing financial assistance for my textbooks and supplies. I may not be able to afford books that I need for certain courses. EOP can afford whatever my family cant. The program will benefit me socially by meeting other college students who are in the same predicament as me. I will also be able to interact with students from different cultures. I can benefit from this by being exposed to diversity and learning how to adapt to other students lifestyle. EOP benefits me educationally by helping me get through college academically. I will be provided with academic support that I need. For example a tutor, I’ll receive extra help with my college work. EOP will benefit me because I will be able to take advantage of what the program is offering and succeed in college.

Health Class

When i first started taking health i really didn't like it, but now that we are learning interesting things i actually enjoy it. The things that we are learning now i can relate to because they target teens like me. At first i didn't understand the purpose of a health class but now i do. Health class informs you about your health and body, and how things around you in society can affect your life. In class we are currently learning about STI's. A STI is a sexual transmitted infection. We learned about bacterial STIs and viral STIs. Bacterial STIs are vaginitis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphillis and pelvic inflammatory. Viral STIs are genital herpes, human papilomavirus/ genital warts, hepatitis and HIV/AIDS. The most common STI out of all these listed is Chlamydia. Chlamydia is caused by a bacterium. Chlamydia can effect both men and women. It can cause serious , permanent damage to a womans reproductive system.

Dedication To TMA

6 Years strong and I dont regret any of it. Being in TMA I learned a life lesson I will never forget. Which is “ If you want something don't let anything or anybody stop you from succeeding. TMA gave me so much confidence and strength to work toward my future. Im so glad I grew up and remained focused. In TMA I've truly met some wonderful people who have impacted my life in many ways. During this journey I lost good friends and gained better ones. I made sure that I stayed with those who encouraged and believed in me. My close friends turned into my family and I couldn't have done it without them. Although It wasn't easy I succeed because god wouldnt put me through anything I cant handle. My journey at TMA has come to an end but my life journey has yet to begin.
